CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Ryuunosuke Akutagawa
AGE: 35
CANON: Bungou to Alchemist

CANON HISTORY: The real Ryuunosuke, tidbits about his life are in the trivia section of this wiki.

In this universe, there are evil spirits known as Taints destroying literature. Not only are they literally destroying the books, but they are blotting out the existence of these stories within everyone's minds. In other words, the books are just being forgotten. In order to stop this from happening, the National Library has employed an alchemist librarian to summon spirits of those closely tied to literature in order to fight the Taints and restore the books back to their proper places.

Akutagawa is one of these spirits summoned. He doesn't immediately remember everything about his life, but the more he's used by the Librarian, the more he remembers. He is one of the strongest spirits you can summon, and thus spends a lot of his time fighting. Outside of that, he hangs around the cafeteria, the library, and other places, probably smoking a cigarette. He mingles with the other spirits of famous authors and poets, and occasionally participates in retrieving more of these spirits with the Librarian. This is also a duty bestowed upon him once summoned.

Akutagawa takes part in two events in particular. The first is a Dazai-centric event, though he does make an appearance as it centers around Dazai not wining the Akutagawa writing prize. He appears to give his commentary about that, and then later on to talk with Shiga Naoya about Dazai and how he is not a "god" like Naoya is. He is down on himself, to which Naoya tries to talk him back up again, only to say that Akutagawa and Dazai both have not changed a bit. The second event he takes part in, he plays a bigger role. It centers around Kume Masao, who was closely acquainted with Akutagawa and some other famous writers. Akutagawa recounts how Masao was jealous of him and tells the story. He also meets up with his friend Kan to talk about old times. It turns out that Masao's book has a Taint, and the Taint takes the form of Akutagawa. Together, with recollections and memories of Masao's that they witness, they're able to take the Taint down and defeat it.

There are also a number of tainted books that Akutagawa appears in and interacts with other writers including Dazai, Kikuchi Kan, and Shiga Naoya. Mostly they reminisce on old times or talk about the situation at hand. Like in Kan's recollection, he gets knocked out from fighting too carelessly, and Akutagawa scolds him for it. He interacts with his fellow writers differently depending on what their relationship in life was. Most of the recollections are positive ones though.

Aside from that, Akutagawa just hangs around the library, waiting to delve into books or fight Taints.

CANON PERSONALITY:
The first thing people usually notice when they meet Akutagawa is that his bearings betray his upbringing. He has a proper elegance to him, as well as a certain "stiffness", so he may come off as uptight at first. This is an impression quickly dissolved, but one he can't help but give off nonetheless. His poise and mannerisms suggest he is a man of great manners and upbringing, and he is.

The second thing you might notice about Akutagawa then is that he's pretty airheaded. He can be delayed in noticing things or also appear gullible over things he's told, only to become flustered once he's learned he's fallen for something. He's a bit innocent in that way, if only his life's experiences and personal writings said as much.

His work is more important to him than anything else. He is always thinking about his "art", and is very passionate about literature, starting at a young age but especially coming to fruition in university, where he began to publish his works. He became very much involved with the literary world and was a strong critic of other schools of writing, while praising idols of his own (such as Naoya Shiga).

He is mostly serious and softspoken. His life has not been an easy one, despite his position of wealth. Mostly because he was burdened with a lot of responsibility which did a number on his health. So he has many reasons to be a somber person, and that can bleed through with his conversations with others. He can offhandedly sigh or mention something about being melancholy at the drop of a dime. He has a sort of fascination with death, and often thought about it. He even tried to convince someone to commit a double suicide with him, though he failed. In a sense, he probably never planned on living long in the first place, so he figured he may as well end things on his own terms. While not nearly as bad as, say, Dazai, his melaoncholy could bleed over into pretty morbid thoughts.

He can also be an anxious person, and in fact took his own life for feeling a "vague uneasiness" about the future. There is always something on Akutagawa's mind making him worry or fret, and this in turn affects his mood. However, it's not all anxiousness and sadness for Akutagawa. He is charismatic and charming, often drawing in all types of people (though they say it was more often troublesome people than not). He is very likable despite his bad habits, and is likely to treat a person kindly. He'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt, until they prove otherwise.

Akutagawa is self-proclaimed lazy. He says he's a surprisingly lazy person and even wears clothing that is easy to get on and off rather than something complicated that would take too much effort. This is why he prefers Japanese clothing over Western clothing (though with all the straps and belts and stuff his outfit has anyway, you kind of have to question him). He'd rather take it easy over anything else, though life often ignores that and makes him work hard anyway.

Overall, Akutagawa is easy to misunderstand, and he's aware of this fact. But he's a gentle but troubled soul with a natural kind of charisma that can't help but leave you wondering about him and longing to learn more. Whether or not he'll tell you more is anyone's guess.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Sword summoning → Akutagawa carries a book that can transform into a large katana that he uses to fight Taints.
- Swordsmanship → Being summoned gave him the ability to wield a sword with great skill. He is one of the strongest units you can summon.
- Writing → Akutagawa is considered one of Japan's most prolific writers even to this day. There are even prestigious awards named after him.
- Ink Healing → Ink has the power to heal his wounds, being as he's a being summoned up from the paper and ink of a book (he also only bleeds ink).

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Ryuunosuke Niihara
AU AGE: 35
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: none

AU HISTORY:
- First generation Japanese, born to the wealthy Niihara family in Japan.
- Had a relatively normal childhood, attending private schools through high school, where he performed adequately. He got good grades but not the very best.
- eventually went to a prestigious Japanese university to get a degree in literature. His family was a little disappointed, they wanted him to be in business, but overall they were supportive.
- While at university, he met what he thought was the love of his life. He proposed to her after almost two years of dating. They agreed to get married after graduation sometime.
- He and his fiancee both got job opportunities that would send them abroad to Recolle. That's how he decided to move to the city. And they did move when he was around 25 years old, however, the relationship wasn't meant to last.
- Broke up with his fiancee amicably, but he himself decided to stay in Recolle and see what kind of life he could build for himself. Her status is unknown. He lost contact with her over the years.
- Opened up a candy shop, despite his literature degree. Interests and opportunities led him down this path.
- He had a few flings, including with Kiyoshi, but nothing ever really stuck.
- He's fully devoted to his candy business, which sells old fashioned style candy as well as some modern type things and a little section devoted to Japanese sweets. Part of Japan would always be with him, after all.
- The shop has been opened for almost ten years now, so he will be celebrating its tenth anniversary soon.
- Became very involved with the community, and attends town meetings and events almost religiously, devoting a lot of his free time to them.
- he had a relatively normal upbringing. as normal as an upperclass family can have, in any case. His parents kept him somewhat coddled, but he was never stuck up about it.
- during school he got good grades for the most part. Studying came naturally to him and so he was able to use that to his advantage and not really have to try as hard as the average student.
- he began writing short stories in junior high school, which is where he developed an interest in literature. the more he wrote, the more he read, also.
- in high school, he was on the newspaper committee. he didn't really have time or care to be in other activities, as he was fully devoted to the paper. He did volunteer in the library when he had time, however, and remained a bookworm.
- His parents didn't want him in any sports anyway because they didn't want him getting hurt.
- he was not overly popular during school, but he was not disliked either. He was just kind of in the middle, and got along with all kinds of students. No one really had a reason to dislike him.
- once he met his fiancee, she taught him how to cook, and he became very interested in the mechanics of cooking. That may have been the spark that eventually ignited his candy venture (the whole process of making and perfecting candies).
- he recovered pretty quickly from breaking up with his fiancee, because it was an amicable agreement.

AU PERSONALITY:
The biggest thing that changes for Akutagawa (or shall we say Niihara) is that he has far less familial burden to deal with than he did in his old life. That means he's in good health and, most of the time, in a good mood too. He's not nearly as melancholy as the real Akutagawa could be. As such, he is less fascinated with death as well and far less likely to suggest a double suicide or even to take his own life.

He doesn't rely on vices like smoking to help him with his "art", and participates less in smoking and drinking than he did in his old life. If someone asked him to stamp out a cigarette, he would be much more willing to, since the cigarette is much less of a self-proclaimed life saver. You could also say his personality is less addictive than his old self's.

He is also less anxious about his life, as he has far less worries than his original self did. Rather than fretting about the future, he lives in the now and rarely thinks about what's to come. In a way that makes him more upbeat than his past self, and more confident as well. His confidence in turn probably makes him a harder worker. He would not call himself lazy, whereas his past self would.

Although the break-up was a friendly one, Ryuunosuke became more guarded when it comes to relationships. He didn't change a whole lot, but he decided not to put his whole heart into things until he knew the person was absolutely the Right One, which hasn't happened yet. Flings were just that: flings, where he was interested in a little release but not so much in emotionally investing. He may appear casual about relationships but in reality, he keeps himself pretty boarded up until he's absolutely ready. He's not bitter or anything, just careful not to make the same mistakes.
